Traveling in London today! In the background is St. Paul's Cathedral, one of the most famous buildings on the London skyline. In the front is the Thames River (pronounced Temz around here). Can you think of a movie that features the dome of St. Paul's as well as many other London roofs?
Doing the limbo under the London Tower Bridge. The bridge is over 100 years old and has some massive machines inside to lift the drawbridge a few times every day to let big ships go by. When it was first built, the bridge was lifted up and down up to 50 times every day!
The Tower Bridge, a marvel of Victorian engineering. Yes, it was STEAM POWERED.
The Tower Bridge.
The Tower of London, founded in 1066 during the Norman Conquest and variously used over the centuries as a palace, fortress, prison, and museum. In this view you can see the multiple layers of defensive encircling walls added over the years to keep pace with improvements in ballistic technology.
Main entrance to the Tower of London. Note the various modifications and additions to the towers evident from the different types of stone and brick used.
Outside the Tower of London, where they keep the British crown jewels. There isn't water in the moat anymore, but there are still some stern-looking guards in funny hats that keep the jewels safe from curious tourists.
Main entrance to the Tower of London. The stone slots visible in the lower right used to hold a pivoting drawbridge with massive weights that fit into the slots; if the ropes holding the bridge open were cut, it would snap shut.
The "Traitor's Gate", Tower of London. It used to be a real honest-to-goodness water entrance to the Tower, before the quay was extended further into the Thames.
